Gilead's Diverse HIV Pipeline Offers Competitive Advantage with Seven Candidates in Development
核心洞察
Gilead Sciences has seven HIV (搜索) candidates and combinations in its pipeline, offering diverse treatment and prevention options with varying dosing schedules and administration methods.
The company's newest PrEP treatment Yeztugo (搜索) (lenacapavir) achieved $150 million in preliminary sales in 2025 and demonstrated 100% and 99% protection against HIV (搜索) in two Phase III trials.
Gilead expects regulatory decisions for its daily oral BIC/LEN combination in H2 2026 and plans to present Phase III data for a weekly oral combination with MSD's islatravir in H1 2026.
Gilead Sciences' extensive HIV (搜索) pipeline positions the company for continued market leadership, with CEO Daniel O'Day highlighting the competitive advantage of offering diverse treatment options during the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference 2026 in San Francisco.
Speaking at the conference on January 12, O'Day emphasized that Gilead has seven candidates and combinations in development for HIV (搜索) treatment and prevention, providing patients with varying dosing schedules and administration methods across both anti-retroviral therapies (ART) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
"We have significantly expanded and diversified our pipeline with a range of options because if there's one thing we know in HIV (搜索), it's that patients want options," O'Day stated. "People who want to prevent HIV want options that fit their life and their lifestyle, particularly as we have transformed this disease from a death sentence to a preventable long-term, chronic illness."
Strong Performance of Lenacapavir-Based Treatments
Gilead's newest PrEP treatment, Yeztugo (搜索) (lenacapavir), has demonstrated exceptional clinical and commercial success since its mid-2025 US launch. The twice-yearly injectable PrEP generated $150 million in preliminary sales in 2025, meeting the company's guidance, and achieved 85% payer coverage in the US with $0 copay availability on some policies.
The drug's clinical performance has been equally impressive, touting 100% and 99% protection against HIV (搜索) in two Phase III trials. Lenacapavir is also marketed under the name Sulenca (搜索) when used as an ART treatment.
Upcoming Regulatory Milestones and Data Releases
Gilead expects several key developments in its HIV (搜索) pipeline throughout 2026 and 2027. The company anticipates a regulatory decision for its daily oral combination of bictegravir and lenacapavir (BIC/LEN) in the second half of 2026, with full Phase III ARTISTRY programme data scheduled for release in the first half of 2026.
Additionally, Gilead plans to present data from two Phase III trials (NCT06630286 and NCT06630299) of a weekly oral combination featuring MSD's islatravir and Gilead's lenacapavir in the first half of 2026, positioning the company for a potential 2027 launch.
Looking further ahead, Gilead is developing a once-yearly lenacapavir regimen for PrEP, targeting a 2028 launch if clinical trials demonstrate success.
Global Access and Market Protection
Beyond commercial success in developed markets, Gilead has prioritized global access to HIV (搜索) prevention. O'Day noted that lenacapavir was delivered to a sub-Saharan African country for the first time in late 2025, the same year as its US introduction.
"We take our responsibility in terms of ending the epidemic very, very seriously," O'Day said. "We know that two-thirds of HIV (搜索) cases are in sub-Saharan Africa. If we don't stop HIV everywhere, we won't stop it anywhere."
The company maintains patent protection for its key HIV (搜索) treatments, with flagship ART Biktarvy (bictegravir, emtricitabine, tenofovir alafenamide) retaining exclusivity until 2036, while Descovy (emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide) will lose exclusivity in 2031.
Market Outlook and Financial Projections
GlobalData (搜索) forecasts significant growth potential for Gilead's lenacapavir-based treatments, predicting combined patient-based sales of $4.98 billion for Yeztugo (搜索) and Sulenca (搜索) by 2033. The broader HIV (搜索) market across seven major markets (US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, and Japan) is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 1.9%, expanding from $26.5 billion in 2023 to $32.1 billion in 2033.
