India Launches First-Ever Phytochemical and Botanical Reference Standards to Advance Phytopharmaceutical Quality
核心洞察
The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (搜索) (IPC) launched seven Phytochemical Reference Standards (IPPRS) and five Botanical Reference Standards (IPBRS), the first of their kind introduced by the Commission.
The standards were unveiled at a Scientific Conclave held at NIPER Guwahati on 27 August 2026, the first such interactive meeting organised in India's Northeast region.
The initiative aims to strengthen scientific standardisation, quality assurance, and regulatory evaluation of plant-derived medicinal products, supporting evidence-based development and therapeutic evaluation.
The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (搜索) (IPC), under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, has launched the first-ever Indian Pharmacopoeia Phytochemical Reference Standards (IPPRS) and Indian Pharmacopoeia Botanical Reference Standards (IPBRS), marking a significant advancement in the scientific standardisation, quality assurance, and regulatory evaluation of plant-derived medicinal products.
The launch took place during a Scientific Conclave and Interactive Session on "Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) 2026: Advancing Quality, Safety, and Innovation in Drugs, Food and Phytopharmaceuticals," held at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) Guwahati on 27 August 2026. The interactive meeting, organised for the first time in the Northeast region, brought together experts and stakeholders from regulatory authorities, academia, and scientific institutions to deliberate on strengthening the quality and standardisation of phytopharmaceuticals in the country.
Seven Phytochemical and Five Botanical Reference Standards Launched
A major highlight of the event was the launch of seven IPPRS and five IPBRS by IPC, marking the first-ever introduction of these critical reference standards by the Commission. The phytochemical reference standards launched are Andrographolide, Capsaicin, Embelin, Eugenol, Marmelosin (搜索)/Imperatorin, Scopoletin (搜索), and Umbelliferone (搜索). The botanical reference standards launched are Terminalia arjuna (搜索), Bacopa monnieri, Tinospora cordifolia (搜索), Centella asiatica, and Ocimum sanctum.
Phytopharmaceuticals represent an important interface between traditional medicinal knowledge and modern scientific approaches, facilitating the development of safe, effective, and standardised plant-based medicines. They have the potential to contribute to drug discovery, affordable healthcare, and India's growing contribution to the global pharmaceutical sector.
Strengthening the Scientific and Regulatory Foundation
The reference standards are expected to support the evidence-based development, quality control, and therapeutic evaluation of phytopharmaceuticals, thereby strengthening their scientific and regulatory foundation. The standards were launched by Prof. Ashok Puranik, Executive Director, AIIMS-Guwahati, who described the initiative as a remarkable step towards strengthening the quality, safety, and scientific validation of herbal and plant-based medicinal products.
In his inaugural address, Dr. V. Kalaiselvan, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (搜索), highlighted the importance of collaboration with the NIPER Guwahati laboratory in ensuring robust quality standards for phytopharmaceuticals. He emphasised that such collaborative efforts are crucial for advancing scientific standardisation and promoting quality-assured plant-based medicinal products.
The event was also graced by Dr. B. Kumar, DDC(I), CDSCO (EZ), and Dr. Ethengbemo Ezung, ADC, Nagaland, along with experts and stakeholders from the regulatory, academic, and scientific communities.
A Platform for Evidence-Based Plant Medicines
The meeting provided an important platform for interaction among experts from regulatory authorities, NIPER Guwahati, and IPC, with a focus on promoting evidence-based medicines derived from medicinal plants. The initiative is expected to strengthen the availability of safe, effective, and affordable plant-based therapeutic options while encouraging further research, innovation, and scientific advancement in the field of herbal and phytopharmaceutical medicines.
India's Growing Global Role in Pharmaceutical Standards
The launch of these reference standards aligns with India's expanding influence in shaping global pharmaceutical quality frameworks. A delegation from the IPC, led by Dr. V. Kalaiselvan, recently participated in the 16th International Meeting of World Pharmacopoeias (IMWP) and the accompanying Stakeholders' Meeting held in Brasília, Brazil, from 15 to 17 June 2026. The event, coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO), brought together representatives from leading pharmacopoeias across the world, including Brazil, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
During the meeting, discussions reaffirmed that Indian Pharmacopoeia standards are comparable with those maintained by major international pharmacopoeias. India received recognition for its contributions to developing quality standards for a range of critical medicines and healthcare products, with particular attention given to its work in establishing standards for anti-tuberculosis medicines, cancer treatments, blood and blood products, medicines used in the treatment of anaemia, and several complex pharmaceutical compounds.
