MUNICH, June 25, 2026 — Innovative Molecules GmbH announced that the first patient has been dosed in its Phase 2a clinical trial of adibelivir (搜索) (IM-250), a novel oral helicase-primase (搜索) inhibitor, for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes (搜索). The milestone advances the Munich-based biotechnology company into late-stage clinical development and marks the beginning of proof-of-concept evaluation for its lead antiviral program.
The Phase 2a study is designed to evaluate the safety, antiviral activity, pharmacokinetics, and clinical efficacy of adibelivir (搜索) in patients with recurrent genital herpes (搜索). The trial design reflects the company's strategy to demonstrate both target engagement and meaningful patient benefit within a single efficient cohort before committing to a larger registrational program.

Adibelivir (搜索) is a selective helicase-primase (搜索) inhibitor that disrupts herpes simplex virus (HSV) replication by blocking the viral helicase-primase complex, a mechanism entirely distinct from currently available nucleoside analogues. This mechanistic distinction carries clinical significance: patients who harbor acyclovir-resistant HSV strains carry mutations in viral thymidine kinase, which nucleoside analogues require for activation. Those mutations leave helicase-primase function completely intact, positioning adibelivir as a potential therapeutic option for this underserved population.
Recurrent genital herpes (搜索) affects an estimated 81 to 98 cases per 100,000 person-years in the United States alone. Despite this substantial disease burden, nucleoside analogues have anchored standard care since acyclovir's FDA approval in 1985, leaving a four-decade gap in therapeutic innovation that Innovative Molecules aims to address.

The EBV program is currently progressing through IND-enabling activities, with a development candidate expected to enter clinical development following completion of ongoing preclinical work.
The strategic rationale for this pipeline expansion rests on a conserved biological target: the helicase-primase (搜索) complex is preserved across herpesviruses, meaning preclinical learnings from the HSV program can meaningfully inform EBV program design without requiring a new mechanism of action.
