Revolutionary Approach to Automated Insulin Delivery
Luna is developing what it describes as the world's smallest iCGM-compatible insulin patch pump, paired with a first-of-its-kind fully closed-loop insulin dosing algorithm. The device is specifically designed to serve the vast majority of people with Type 1 Diabetes (搜索) (T1D) and Type 2 Diabetes (搜索) (T2D) who rely on insulin pens rather than traditional pump therapy.
The company's innovative approach focuses on nighttime glucose control, when over 80% of the glucose improvement from traditional pump-based automated insulin delivery occurs. During the day, patients continue using their insulin pens, while the patch pump delivers automated doses of rapid-acting insulin (搜索) during sleep, calculating doses automatically using continuous glucose monitor (CGM) data.
"We regularly hear from the diabetes (搜索) community about their struggles with nighttime glucose control," said CEO John Sjölund in a company blog post. "Parents of children with Type 1 diabetes (搜索) who set multiple alarms to check blood sugar levels. Adults with Type 2 diabetes (搜索) who avoid evening activities because they're worried about overnight complications."

Luna's targeted approach aims to overcome significant barriers that prevent widespread adoption of automated insulin delivery systems. Traditional insulin pumps, while effective for nighttime glucose control, can be complex, expensive, and require substantial lifestyle changes that many patients are unwilling or unable to make.
By focusing specifically on where automation has the greatest impact on glucose control, Luna's system dramatically reduces complexity, lowers costs, and reduces barriers to adoption. This approach makes automated insulin delivery accessible to millions of people worldwide who are either unwilling or unable to wear a traditional pump 24/7.

Experienced Leadership Team
The company was founded by three executives with extensive backgrounds in healthcare technology and personal experience managing diabetes (搜索). CEO John Sjölund and CFO Jon Brilliant, both co-founders, previously served as executives at Bigfoot Biomedical (搜索), a company that developed smart pen caps using CGM data to provide insulin dose recommendations. Abbott acquired Bigfoot Biomedical in 2023.
Beta Bionics CEO Sean Saint also serves as a co-founder and board member of Luna, bringing additional expertise in diabetes (搜索) technology development.
