Gold, MD, during his second annual State of the University Address, delivered in the rotunda of the Nebraska State Capitol.
Dr. Gold highlighted the achievement among a series of accomplishments across the university system over the past year, crediting NU System faculty and staff with the successes. The CAR T-cell therapy milestone reflects UNMC's sustained contributions to advancing cell-based immunotherapies, a field with significant implications for the treatment of cancer and other serious conditions.
Alongside the CAR T-cell therapy milestone, Dr. Gold noted UNMC's successful federal infectious disease response involving patients connected to a hantavirus (搜索) outbreak, as well as Nebraska Medicine (搜索)'s completion of its 10,000th solid organ transplant. These developments underscore the breadth of clinical and research activity at the medical center.
Dr. Gold framed these achievements within the broader context of the university's momentum, while emphasizing that continued investment is essential to sustaining and growing such programs. "The vitality of our university depends on the vitality of the state, just as the vitality of our state depends on the vitality of its university," Dr. Gold said. "At a time of economic and geopolitical uncertainty, investing in the University of Nebraska System is not just an investment in higher education—it is an investment in Nebraska's future, Nebraska's workforce, economy, communities and an investment in generations to come."
The address also highlighted system-wide accomplishments, including joint accreditation between the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and UNMC, approval of a new governance structure for Nebraska Medicine (搜索) that adds the Omaha Community Foundation as a shared governing partner, and charitable giving to the University of Nebraska Foundation exceeding $500 million during the 2026 fiscal year.
Dr. Gold challenged Nebraskans to share personal stories of how the NU System has improved their lives, emphasizing the reach of the university's classrooms, hospitals, clinics, research, and statewide engagement.
