- Royal Perth Hospital has received Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) licences to manufacture both CAR T-cells and tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), becoming the first hospital in Australia authorised to manufacture TILs for clinical trials. - The licensing enables local manufacturing of advanced cell therapies, potentially reducing the need for Western Australian cancer patients to travel for treatment and allowing them to remain closer to family and support networks. - CAR T-cell therapy re-engineers a patient's immune cells to target certain blood cancers, while TIL therapy expands immune cells found within a tumour and is being investigated for melanoma and other solid cancers. - The first clinical trial and patient treatment using locally manufactured CAR T-cell and TIL therapies are expected to begin before the end of 2026.
