Inclusion Criteria

Study population (n = 80)
- Age > 40 years
- COPD as defined by GOLD criteria (post-bronchodilator FEV1/FVC < 0.7)

Control population (n = 20)
- Age > 40 years
- Normal pulmonary function determined by standard spirometry

Exclusion Criteria

Study population
- History of acute exacerbations of COPD within the past 3 months
- History of thoracic surgery
- Known diaphragmatic paralysis or chronic neuromuscular disease

Control population
- History of thoracic surgery
- Known diaphragmatic paralysis or chronic neuromuscular disease
