1) Adults Definition: age >=18 years.
2) Unplanned admission to the ICU
Definition: patients who are admitted acutely to one of the participating ICUs. Patients who have been admitted to the ICU before the start of the inception
1) Patients previously included in the AFIB-ICU study
2)Patients transferred directly from a non-participating ICU
3)Patients who have undergone emergency or scheduled cardiac surgery during the current hospital admission
Definition: any surgery including stent procedures done on the heart muscle, valves, or thoracic arteries including the thoracic part of the aorta. Patients who have undergone non-cardiac thoracic surgery and other surgical procedures including those on the aorta outside the thorax can be included.
4)Patients with documented history of persistent AF
Definition: recurrent episodes of AF that last 7 days or more.
5)Patients with documented history of permanent AF
Definition: existing AF with failed previous strategies for maintaining sinus rhythm and not further pursued
