Included were both, male and female patients with diagnosed, periodontitis as well as healthy control subjects (in the context of sequence optimization and as a healthy comparison collective). Diagnosis of generalized periodontitis was made when clinical periodontal attachment loss was present at >2 interdental sites at non-adjacent teeth and/or a probing pocket depth of >3mm at oral or lingual sites. At least 30% of teeth had to be affected by periodontitis. None of the healthy control subjects and the periodontitis patients received periodontal treatment within the past six month.
Patients with contraindications for an MRI examination (e.g. pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, artificial heart valves, cochlear implants, metal splinters, insulin pumps) were excluded. Further exclusion criteria were patients with pronounced claustrophobia, psychomotor agitation, pregnant as well as breastfeeding women and patients with a metastatic, malignant underlying disease.
