- •All adult patients from Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney undergoing elective open abdominal or pelvic surgery involving bowel resection.

- •Known swallowing difficulties
- •Risk of aspiration
- •Planned stoma
- •Cognitive impairment
- •Unable to give informed consent
- •English illiterate
