Evaluation of Experiential based learning versus Video based learning in enhancement of the communication skills among the dental undergraduates - A RCT

A randomized control trial will be conducted among the dental undergraduates to evaluate efficiency of different training approaches in enhancement of the communication skills course among the dental undergraduates.

Need for the study: In the field of dentistry, knowledge and technical skills are the prerequisites for good practice which depend upon active listening skills, to gather and impart information effectively, handle patient emotions sensitively, and to demonstrate empathy, rapport, ethical awareness, and professionalism. Among the benefits noted when dentists demonstrate effective communication skills it has increased patient satisfaction, improved patient adherence to dental recommendations, decreased patient anxiety, and lower rates of formal complaints and malpractice claims. Despite widespread recognition of the importance of communication skills training in the dental curriculum, the reality of what is practiced is somewhat different. Where programs do exist, they often take the form of lectures or passive learning and emphasize theoretical aspects of communication rather than providing opportunities for skills-based practice. Proficiency in communication skills, team-building skills, and global knowledge is slowly becoming an essential part of dental education in India. Till date, the literature does not include reports of evaluation and training in communication skills during undergraduate dental education in India. So, the purpose of this dissertation is to develop and implement a course on communication skills among dental undergraduate students in Sri Sai College Of Dental Surgery, Vikarabad.
