Adult patients = 18 years of age will be screened daily for clinical signs and symptoms
consistent with nosocomial pneumonia, i.e., one developed 48 h or later after admission.: had to meet two criteria (a,b)
a. A patient had to have a chest radiograph consistent with the diagnosis of pneumonia (new or
persistent radiographic infiltrates(new or progressive infiltrates, consolidation, with/without
pleural effusion
b. Modified CPIS (clinical pulmonary infection score) = 4
a.presence ofmeningitis, endocarditis, or osteomyelitis
b.bone marrow tranplantation or organ transplantation
c.vancomycin treatment for = 48 h for any reason in the preceding week;
d.elevated liver enzymes (= 3 times the upper limits of normal) or total bilirubin = 3.0 mg/dL
e.severe neutropenia (< 1000 cells /mm3) or human immunodeficiency virus infection
f.chemotherapy or persistent immunosuppression is needed
g.a pathogen resistant to RFP or vancomycin
