Patients undergoing hepatectomy with resection of three or more hepatic segments at the Royal infirmary of Edinburgh will be eligible for inclusion in the study. These patients will demonstrate detectable hepatic injury post-operatively.

Patients undergoing minor resections will be excluded. Jaundiced (bilirubin >100 µmol l-1) patients and those with established cirrhosis will also be excluded. Patients who have had a previous liver resection will be excluded. Patients who are unable to give informed consent will be excluded. Patients who are pregnant or breast feeding will also be excluded.
