Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • •1\. ASA II or III
  • •2\. Well controlled type 2 diabetic patients using oral hypoglycaemic agents or insulin.
  • •3\. Elective open abdominal surgery.
  • •4\. Duration of surgery 2 to 6 hours.

Exclusion Criteria

  • •1\. Diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic neuropathy.
  • •2\. Hepatic and/or renal dysfunction.
  • •3\. Pancreatic cancer or islet cell tumours.
  • •4\. Patients receiving drugs with known effects on sympathetic response or hormonal secretion such as beta blockers
