Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • •Respiratory failure within 48hrs post extubation requiring non invasive respiratory support (i.e., High flow nasal oxygenation)

Exclusion Criteria

  • •Age < 18yrs
  • •Elective intubation for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes
  • •Do not intubate orders
  • •Accidental extubation
  • •Presence of hypercapnia (PaCO2 > 45 mmHg)
  • •Acute respiratory failure secondary to asthma
  • •Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation
