Inclusion Criteria

patients with catatonia, mania, depression and schizophrenia (diagnosed by ICD-10 criteria) who are planned for MECT (for refusal of food, severely violent or suicidal intention, poor response to medicines and other treatment

Exclusion Criteria

1. Patients with a history of epilepsy either current/remote with/ without medications

2. Pregnancy (to be ruled out with urinary pregnancy test)

3. Those that are on drugs which can modify seizure potential other than psychotropic

(e.g. amphetamines, aminophylline, isoniazid, cocaine, tramadol and

diphenhydramine)

4. Past history of significant major/ minor head injury as defined in Minor Traumatic

Brain Injury (MTBI) Working Group of American Academy of Neurology.

5. Those are not fit for MECT in terms of anaesthesia (e.g. allergic to aesthetic agents)

or other medical causes (e.g. recent spine injury, dislocation of joints, brain tumour

with increased ICT, recent CVA, MI).
