Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Patients aged between 30 and 60 years, male and female, both taking and not taking antihypertensive drugs.
  • Patients who meet the diagnostic criteria of Borderline and Stage I hypertension according to (JNC-7 and WHO/ISH criteria Border line and stage I) Systolic blood pressure 159>=(SBP) >=130 and/or diastolic blood pressure 99>=(DBP) >=85 .
  • Patients who are diagnosed as Liver-yang excess (common symptoms include headache, feeling of head distension and vertigo, blurred vision, irritability, anger, tinnitus, insomnia).
  • Patients who have a good understanding of the trial and willing to comply with trial protocol.
  • Informed consent form must be signed by patient or lineal relative.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Patients who have been diagnosed as stage II hypertension and secondary hypertension.
  • Patients with accompanying other severe medical conditions who may be not safe to join our study.
  • Patients with a chronic disease which might not be suitable for the trial e.g: epilepsy, patients under any psychotic medications.
  • Pregnant women or women in lactation.
  • Patients who currently are participating in other clinical trials.
  • Patients treated with acupuncture during the previous three months.
