Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • •Critically ill children 2 years to \<15 years of age with an acute need for invasive
  • •mechanical ventilation(\<\= 72 hours) by oral endotracheal tube with
  • •oxygenation index \>\= 4 or oxygen saturation index \>\= 5 with chest infiltrates

Exclusion Criteria

  • •Neuromuscular disease
  • •Contraindications for trans\-esophageal catheter insertion
  • •Active uncontrolled esophageal or gastric bleeding
  • •Traumatic brain injury
  • •Extubation within 24 hours of intubation
