1.Proven histological diagnosis of esophageal cancer
2.ECOG performance status 0,1
3.Cardiopulmonary reserve adequate for esophageal surgery
4.American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) grade I or II
5.Treatment plan of total esophageal resection
6.Esophageal substitution by stomach tube
7.Posterior mediastinal route of reconstruction
8.Patient available for follow up
1.Patients with a known allergy to erythromycin or other macrolides
2.Pyloric drainage procedure performed
3.Colonic reconstruction
4.Pregnant women
5.Patients on prokinetic drugs, astemizole, terfenadine and pimozide
