Patient groups:
-age 18 to 80
-cryptogenic or symptomatic epilepsy
-premorbid FSIQ > 70;Healthy controls
-age 18-80
-premorbid FSIQ > 70
- mental retardation (FSIQ < 70 before participants were 18 years old)
- idiopathic epilepsy
- epilepsy-related brain surgery
- psychiatric disease at present state
- progressive neurological disorders
- neurodegenerative diseases and other diseases/causes that may underlie cognitive decline
- native language other than Dutch
- claustrophobia
- metal implants or other contraindications for MRI
- pregnancy

- Primary Outcome Measures
Name Time Method <p>The main study parameters are:<br /><br>1. Cognitive parameters, i.e. the neuropsychological parameters for global<br /><br>cognitive decline ( * 1SD discrepancy between current IQ and estimated<br /><br>premorbid IQ [4]), information processing speed, attention and memory.<br /><br>2. MRI parameters: macrostructural, microstructural and functional, and blood<br /><br>brain perfusion.<br /><br></p><br>

Name Time Method <p>Secondary study parameters are:<br /><br>1. Demographic parameters: gender, handedness, level of education.<br /><br>2. Epilepsy related factors: type of epilepsy (i.e. cryptogenic, symptomatic),<br /><br>age at onset, seizure duration, seizure frequency per year, seizure type,<br /><br>history of SE.<br /><br>3. Clinical factors: medical history, type and dose of medication.</p><br>
