Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- •1) AGE >18years
- •2) Elective cardiac surgery
- •3) Surgical intervention performed with CPB, aortic cross-clamping 4) Valvular surgery, coronary surgery, surgery on the ascending aorta 5) Median sternotomy and bi-pulmonary ventilation
Exclusion Criteria
- •1) Patient refusal
- •2) Non elective cardiac surgery
- •3) Previous cardiac surgery
- •4) Anticipated circulatory arrest.
- •5) Patients with BMI >30
- •6) Patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease (defined as need for dialysis) 7) Patients with known respiratory diseases (ongoing respiratory infections, asthma, COPD, OSAS)
- •8) Patients already intubated before arrival in operating theatre
- •9) Previous pulmonary resection
- •10) Patients with a preoperative oxygen saturation <90%, or Pa O2 < 60 mmHg without supplemental oxygen, or a PaO2 /FiO 2 ratio <300, or PaCO 2 > 45 mmHg
- •11) Patients with hepatic disease, defined as elevated liver enzymes (higher than two reference intervals)
- •12) Patients with pulmonary hypertension (defined as preoperative estimated systolic pulmonary artery pressure >55 mmHg)
