Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • 1\) AGE \>18years
  • 2\) Elective cardiac surgery
  • 3\) Surgical intervention performed with CPB, aortic cross\-clamping 4\) Valvular surgery, coronary surgery, surgery on the ascending aorta 5\) Median sternotomy and bi\-pulmonary ventilation

Exclusion Criteria

  • 1\) Patient refusal
  • 2\) Non elective cardiac surgery
  • 3\) Previous cardiac surgery
  • 4\) Anticipated circulatory arrest.
  • 5\) Patients with BMI \>30
  • 6\) Patients with end\-stage chronic kidney disease (defined as need for dialysis) 7\) Patients with known respiratory diseases (ongoing respiratory infections, asthma, COPD, OSAS)
  • 8\) Patients already intubated before arrival in operating theatre
  • 9\) Previous pulmonary resection
  • 10\) Patients with a preoperative oxygen saturation \<90%, or Pa O2 \< 60 mmHg without supplemental oxygen, or a PaO2 /FiO 2 ratio \<300, or PaCO 2 \> 45 mmHg
  • 11\) Patients with hepatic disease, defined as elevated liver enzymes (higher than two reference intervals)
