Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • \- older than 18 years
  • \- sedated (all levels of sedation) or not yet responsive (Ramsay 5\-6\)
  • \- Volume supported or pressure supported mechanically ventilated
  • \- respiratory and hemodynamically stable
  • \- signed formed consent by legal representative

Exclusion Criteria

  • \- known systemic neuromuscular disease (eg, Guillain\-Barre syndrome)
  • \- ability to actively move the legs
  • \- life expectancy less than 24 hours determined by the physician
  • \- in contact isolation
  • \- pacemaker or implanted cardiac defibrillator
  • \- pregnancy
  • \- body mass index of \> 35kg/m2
  • \- condition in the lower extremity preventing treatment (Skin lesions, fractures, amputations, known or suspected malignancy in the legs, myopathy, paresis of the stimulated muscles, epilepsy, allergic reactions to the electrodes, peripheral edemas counteracting NMES, heavy ischaemia of the lower extremities
  • \- corticosteroids usage (\>7\.5mg/day \>3 months)
  • \- positive end\-expiratory pressure (PEEP) \> 14 cmH2O, Fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2\) \>0\.6 and the presence of air leakage (Haugen, Chan, \& Li, 2007\) (Kho et al., 2012, Gruther et al., 2010\).
