Inclusion Criteria
All consecutive surgical patients with sepsis and septic shock due to sepsis criteria admitted to the surgical intensive care unit.
Exclusion Criteria
1. patients that refused to study
2. patients that had pre-existing systemic disease
3. patients that were significantly limiting life expectancy
4. patients that were transferred to tertiary care hospital
5. patients that were intolerance to protocol
