- •intubated and mechanically ventilated more than 48 hours
- •passed to spontaneous breathing trial

- •Contra-indicated for diaphragm ultrasound
- •Diaphragm pathology
- •Diagnosed neuromuscular pathology e.g. MG, ALS
- •Inability to participate until the end of the trial
- •Withdrawal of informed consent
