Study Overview
Brief Summary
The intention-to-treat and per-protocol analyses revealed that the exercise group exhibited significant improvements in the overall frailty score (-1.26 ± 0.96, p<.001; -1.28 ± 1.02, p<.001), gait speed (0.27 ± 0.22, p<.001; 0.31 ± 0.19, p<.001), grip strength (1.58 ± 3.94, p<.001; 2.03 ± 3.79, p<.001), exhaustion (4.57 ± 7.74, p=.021; 5.36 ± 8.09, p=.015), SPPB score (0.88 ± 1.43, p=.039; 1.17 ± 1.29, p=.010), dialysis efficiency (0.13± 0.22, p=.013; 0.12 ± 0.21; p=.012), and PCS score (5.69 ± 5.58, p=.005; 6.29 ± 5.62, p=.003)

Eligibility Criteria
- Ages
- 18?(Year) to 70?(Year) (—)
- Sex
- All
Inclusion Criteria
- •A convenience sample of 42 hemodialysis patients was enrolled at a university hospital-affiliated hemodialysis center among 100 potential participants after screening based on the eligibility criteria. All participants were undergoing regular hemodialysis (3 times/week in 3–4-h sessions) using a Formula 2000 device (Bellco, Italy) with a synthetic cellulose membrane and bicarbonate dialysate.
- •The eligibility criteria were
- •1) age of =18 years
- •2) hemodialysis duration of =3 months required for dialysis adjustment (Tao, Chow, & Wong, 2015; Lopes et al, 2019)
- •3) no perfusion problems through arteriovenous fistula to maintain adequate blood flow (250 mL/min)
- •4) no severe hemodialysis-related complications
- •5) the ability to use a cycle ergometer while lying in the dialysis bed
- •6) the cognitive ability to read and comprehend the questionnaire.
Exclusion Criteria
- •To minimize exercise-related risks, participants were excluded if they had a history of any cardiac risk factors (myocardial infarction, angina pain, or uncontrolled hypertension), musculoskeletal risk factors, or a diagnosis of glaucoma, during the last 6 months.
