Inclusion Criteria

1. Neonates whose parents are willing to give written informed consent

2. All suspected cases of neonatal meningitis

Exclusion Criteria

1.Neonates who had received antibiotics for >3 days

2. Recent brain surgery/ventricular tap

3. Moribound condition in which life expectancy <24hours

4. Grossly traumatic taps

5. Massive stress (severe trauma, surgery, cardiac shock and burns)

6. Parents who refused to give consent
