1.Periodontitis patients aged 35-70 years who have at least 1 periodontally hopeless posterior tooth according to Becker et al. (1984), i.e. teeth with more than one of the following problems:
A. Loss more than 75% of the supporting bone.
B. Probing depths more than 8 mm.
C. Class III furcation involvement.
D. Class III mobility with tooth movement in mesial-distal and vertical directions.
E. Poor crown/root ratios.
F. Root proximity with minimal interproximal bone and evidence of horizontal bone loss.
G. History of repeated periodontal abscess formation.
2. Patients who are able to come for follow-up for the duration of the study.
3. The periodontally hopeless teeth are planned for extraction and the patient decides to do so.
4. Patients who are willing to have their remaining teeth scaled & root planed after extraction.
5. After extraction of the periodontally hopeless teeth, patients still have at least 1 occlusal unit on that side.
1. Patients who refuse to have their periodontally hopeless teeth extracted.
2. Patients who have acute infection and/or acute pain on the day they come for treatment.
3. Patients who are currently under orthodontic treatment.
4. Patients who receive drugs that affect muscle function.
5. Patients who have masticatory muscle pain.
6. Patients who have systemic condition, contra-indicated for scaling & root planing.
7. Patients who are unable to come for follow-up during the study.
8. Patients who are unable to read and answer the questionnaires.
