Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Adult patients (\>\= 18 years) of
  • either sex undergoing
  • emergency laparotomy for
  • major abdominal surgery,
  • requiring general anaesthesia.
  • Informed written consent.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Preoperative requirement of
  • mechanical ventilation.
  • Preoperative room air
  • oximetry SaO2 \<90%, or PaO2
  • Patient requiring high dose of
  • vasopressor support
  • (Norepinephrine equivalent \>
  • 0\.2 mcg/ kg /min).
  • ASA 5 patients, not expected
  • to live beyond 24 hours.
