Brief Summary

Allergic rhinitis1 is an acute IGE mediated , hypersensitivity reaction of nasal mucosa in response to antigenic substance (allergens) associated with episodic  attacks of sneezing, watery rhinnorhea along with nasal congestion. In children it effects upto 20 to 40 %2 specially in prospective socities. Recent evidences suggest that the pervalance of disorder might be increasing day by day.  Earlier allergic rhinitis was thought to be a disease localized to nasal cavity, however current understanding suggests that often the whole airway can get involved, due to physiological, functional and immunological relationships that exists between the upper respiratory tract and lower respiratory tracts3 .General features include nasal  congestion , Itching ,sneezing, childrens often blow their nose or sniff or snort ,coughing ,may feel loss of smell etc. The line of treatment in allopathic system1,2,3 include use of antihistamines, steroids, nasal decongestents like sprays immunotherapy4 (limited) are available which are of majorly symptomatic treatment with many side effects like dryness of mouth ,irritation, drowziness, indigestion, anxiety, insomnia, heartburn5etc According to Ayurveda  it can be co-related to vataja pratishyaya in context of pratishyaya. commonly described symptoms are nasavarodha, nasa kandu, nasa srava, khavathu6,7etc  many treatment aspects with good number of shamanoushadhis have been explained, one among them is lavangadi choorna8, which act as dipana pachana, swasahara, kasahara and tridoshahara properties.this formulation is indicated in respiratory diseases like shwasa ,kasa, hikka tamakashwasa including pinasa, which is the avasta of pratishyaya itself. And it also imparts effect of rasayana9,which promotes the immunity also with   releiving the symptoms.so an attempt has made to evaluate its effect in vataja pratishyaya with respect to allergic rhinitis,in comparision to vyoshadi churna10 which has already  proved its efficacy in pratishyaya.
