The Punjab Health and Family Welfare Department (search) has ordered the immediate suspension of eight drugs and intravenous fluids across all government health institutions following reports of suspected adverse drug reactions (search) in patients at key medical facilities.
The directive, issued Friday via memo reference Pb/2025/3896-3104, responds to adverse reactions observed at Mata Kaushalya Hospital (search) in Patiala and District Hospital in Jalandhar. Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh confirmed the action during a media briefing, emphasizing the department's zero-tolerance stance on substandard pharmaceuticals.
Suspended Medications and Manufacturers
The banned medicines include normal saline (search) (sodium chloride injection IP 0.9%), dextrose injection (search) IP 5%, ciprofloxacin injections 200 mg, DNS 0.9%, NI2 dextrose 5% IV fluid, and bupivacaine HCL with dextrose injection. These products were manufactured by different pharmaceutical firms including Swaroop Pharmaceuticals Private Limited (search), Otsuka Pharmaceutical India Private Limited (search), and Health Biotech Limited (search).
"We have recalled the entire stock available under our jurisdiction and have also issued a note to all hospitals directing them to stop administering the same to patients," said a senior doctor at a government health facility.
Safety Measures and Investigation
Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh stated that suspected adverse drug reactions (search) have been noted following administration of these items in certain facilities. "As a precautionary measure, we've halted their use, issue, and procurement until comprehensive lab evaluations and clinical assessments verify their safety," Singh said, highlighting that patient well-being remains paramount.
The affected batches were manufactured between 2023 and 2025 with expiry dates ranging from 2026 to April 2028. All stock has been quarantined, and detailed usage records are being compiled from all districts to trace distribution patterns.
Regulatory Response
No fatalities have been linked to these incidents, but officials have dispatched samples to accredited laboratories for rigorous testing. The directive also calls for formation of a committee to examine the suspected adverse drug reactions (search) from the batches procured this year.
"We have also sent samples of these for further checks and strict action will be taken against firms if found on the wrong side. We cannot allow anyone to play with innocent lives," Dr. Balbir Singh said. Results are expected to inform potential blacklisting or legal action against non-compliant firms under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
The health department emphasized that this measure ensures no disruptions in essential care while alternatives are sourced, maintaining strict vigil to ensure only quality medicines and fluids are supplied to hospitals.
