- An international research team has identified a synthetic sugar molecule that could support vaccines, antibody therapies and rapid diagnostics for Candida auris, an emerging multidrug-resistant fungus. - The chemically synthesised β-mannan tetrasaccharide, absent from human cells, was linked to a carrier protein to create a glycoconjugate vaccine candidate. - In a mouse infection model, vaccination generated antibodies that recognised the synthetic sugar and reduced fungal load in the kidneys and spleen, with protective activity also shown in passively immunised mice. - The same antibody platform produced a prototype lateral flow test for detecting multiple Candida species, though all approaches remain in preclinical development.
- Simris Biologics received €201K in non-dilutive funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action to develop innovative microcystin-based payloads for antibody-drug conjugates. - The KlicMic project aims to create ADCs with enhanced efficacy and minimal side effects using cyanobacteria-derived microcystins as an alternative to conventional cytotoxic agents. - The company's patented molecular modification methods enable precise optimization, selective antibody conjugation, and fluorescent labeling for targeted cancer therapy with real-time tracking capabilities. - The three-year research program will evaluate optimized microcystin payloads through preclinical testing before licensing to the pharmaceutical industry.
