Inclusion Criteria

•acute gastroenteritis with diarrhea
•moderate dehydration (accord. to WHO 10 point score)
•inability to drink sufficient fluid
•age between three months and six years

Exclusion Criteria

•mild or severe dehydration (accord. to WHO 10 point score)
•severe chronic diseases
•long term medication, affecting the course of the gastroenteritis
•age < three months or > six years
•other complications (hypernatriaemia, hypoglycaemia)

Primary Outcome Measures

ength of inpatient hospital stay in nights, measured according to the date and time of admission and discharge. Current average length of stay: 3.5 nights´.
Secondary Outcome Measures

• Success of rehydration therapy, measured by comparing the WHO-score for clinical signs of dehydration at admission and at reevaluation after six hours<br>•adverse side effects such as phlebitis and paralytic ileus, documented by the nurses on the nurse sheet, by the doctors on the doctor sheet, by the parents on the parnet questionnaire or during the telephone interview two weeks after discharge<br>•incidence of postenteritic syndrome, documented during the telephone interview<br>•satisfaction of parents with treatment, documented on parent questionnaire upon discharge and again two weeks later during the telephone interview
