Patients with atrial fibrillation (ICD-10 code: I48.0 or I48.1) > 18 years of age
- Postmenopausal status in women (last menstrual period > 12 months ago). Premenopausal women would experience excessive hormonal fluctuations due to their menstrual cycle.
- Ability to give consent and sufficient knowledge of German

- Manifest hyperthyroidism (TSH < 0.25 µIU/ml)
- Harmful alcohol use according to ICD10/WHO definition
- The following valve conditions: mitral valve stenosis, moderate/high-grade aortic valve stenosis, moderate/high-grade mitral valve insufficiency
- Postoperative status (operation < 10 d)
- Sepsis according to WHO definition
- Acute or chronic infections (CRP > 15 mg/dl)
- Indications of CHD (corresponding symptoms, echocardiographic or ECG morphological abnormalities) or already diagnosed CHD
- Hypokalemia (K+ < 3.0 mmol/l)
- Acute or chronic right heart strain (systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP) = 36 mmHg in transthoracic echocardiography) (e.g. pulmonary artery embolism or COPD)
- Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS)
- Chronic renal insufficiency
- (uncontrolled) arterial hypertension
- (Z.n.) malignant gynecological tumor disease, (Z.n.) prostate carcinoma, (Z.n.) hormonally active tumors
- Z.n. ovariectomy or Z.n. orchiectomy
- Hormone metabolism disorders with an influence on sex hormone levels
- Daily intake of NSAIDs (diclofenac, ASA, naproxen or ibuprofen),
- Intake of opiates or cortisone compounds
- Hormonal therapy
- Non-consenting ability

- Primary Outcome Measures
Name Time Method - Prevalence of genetic variants in sex hormone receptor genes and associated proteins in patients with atrial fibrillation and gender differences of these variants<br>- Prevalence of altered cellular signal transduction by sex hormone receptor variants in patients with atrial fibrillation
- Secondary Outcome Measures
Name Time Method Sex hormone levels in patients with atrial fibrillation compared to patients without atrial fibrillation
