Presence of at least 20 teeth in their mouth and at least two teeth with >5mm probing depth and clinical attachment loss; no history of initial periodontal therapy including scaling and root planing at least six weeks prior to the study.
Women presenting risk factors to preterm/low-birth-weight: history of diseases including diabetes mellitus, genitourinary tract infections or HIV infection, previous multiple gestations, previous preterm birth/low-birth-weight infants, in vitro fertilization procedures, placental or cervical or uterine abnormalities, history of infertility, history of illegal drug use, history of human immunodefficiency virus type I or hemoglobin levels less than 8 mg/dl following delivery and medical conditions that required antibiotics prophylaxis.
