Inclusion Criteria
All adult patients admitted to a critical care unit following elective major abdominal surgery within Barts and the London NHS Trust will be eligible for recruitment.

Exclusion Criteria
Refusal of consent, concurrent lithium therapy, acute myocardial ischaemia and acute arrhythmias.
