All children aged 2 months to 2 years diagnosed as having acute severe pneumonia and hospitalized will be included in the study after obtaining written informed consent from either of the parents.
Acute Severe Pneumonia is defined in the study as a respiratory rate of 50/min, accompanied with crepitations on auscultation and the presence of any one of the following danger signs: lethargy, inability to feed, chest indrawing, or central cyanosis.
Children will be excluded if they had a history of chronic cardiac or renal disease, illness severe enough to require ventilation, malnutrition severe enough to require immediate nutritional rehabilitation therapy, illness requiring hospitalization in the previous 21 days, or current zinc supplementation.
