Primary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
Expected outcome: Reduction in the incidence of lower respiratory tract infections during intensive care unit stay ;Observed outcome: there was a significant reduction in the incidence of lower respiratory tract infections during intensive care unit stay which was 8.7% in the experimental group and 18.1% in the control group (adjusted RR=0.44, CI95%=0.20-0.96, p=0.04).
Secondary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
Expected outcome: Reduction on the duration of mechanical ventilation, lenght of stay in the intensive care unit, use of antimicrobial agents, and in-hospital mortality<br>;Observed outcome: Expected secondary outcomes were not observed, such as reduction on the duration of mechanical ventilation (11.3±9.0 days in the control group, 10.7±10.6 daysin the experimental group, p=0.225), lenght of stay in the intensive care unit (10.9±8.7 days in the control group, 10.4±9.8 daysin the experimental group, p=0.318), use of antimicrobial agents (8.7±8.0 days in the control group, 8.2±8.5 days in the experimental group, p=0,442), in-hospital mortality rates (31.5% in the control group versus 29.1% in the experimental group, adjusted RR=0.93, CI95%=0.52-1.65, p=0.796).
