All patients met the following inclusion criteria(1) lateral or medial epicondylitis for longer than 3 months; (2) Pain of at least 5 on a visual analog score (VAS) for pain (0, no pain; 10 maximum pain possible); (3) Failure of at least one conservative treatment including orthotic devices, physiotherapy, prolotherapy, extracorporeal shock wave therapy for 1 month, and steroid injection (in case of the steroid group). For the steroid group, patients were included if they had been treated for epicondylitis with a steroid injection in the past 3 month.
The criteria for exclusion were neurological dysfunction or nerve entrapment, fracture in the affected elbow and shoulder or neck, tumors or infections, local or generalized arthritis, bleeding disorders, pregnancy or an age of less than 20 years. Also, patients were excluded if they had been treated for epicondylitis with surgical intervention or with a platelet rich plasma injection.
