Inclusion Criteria

adult, healthy, well-trained mountaineers with previous trekking experience and basic mountaineering skills

Exclusion Criteria

any type of cardiac, renal, hepatic or respiratory diseases or acute or chronic infectious or inflammatory disease, presence of any metabolic disorder, regular intake of medications, and the development of high-altitude pulmonary edema or high-altitude cerebral edema after rapid ascent to altitudes below 3500 m

changes in mitochondrial function of peripheral blood monocytes measured as activity of citrate synthase using a citrate synthase assay kit (Sigma-Aldrich, CS0720) and activity of cytochrome c oxidase using a cytochrome c oxidase assay kit (Sigma-Aldrich, CYTOCOX1) on the altitudes of 440m (baseline), 3700m (day 1), 4500m (day 4) and 5400m (day 9 ) of the expedition.
