Inclusion Criteria

Patients in the emergency room or admitted to the hospital who have non-severe hypercapnia which is defined as partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide of 43 - 69 mmHg and PH above 7.3 by arterial blood gas.

Exclusion Criteria

1. Patients with any sign of imminent respiratory failure requiring intubation and mechanical ventilation
2. Patients with unstable hemodynamics (systolic blood pressure less than 100 mmHg, mean blood pressure less than 60 mmHg, or heart rate faster than 120 beats per minute
3. Patients with shock, intractable arrhythmia, post-CPR status, or ECMO
4. Patients with consciousness disorder which would require intubation (e.g., not responsive, agitated, uncooperative, high risk for aspiration)
5. Patients who had facial surgery, trauma or deformity and airway obstruction that precludes application of nasal cannula.
